I'm no fan of the State, the Crown or Parliament and I've had my run-ins with the Old Bill - but you have to hand it to them: they've done an awesome job with the Everard case. Sarah Everard went missing on Wednesday 3rd. The police put out a public statement within 48 hours that they were searching round the clock for her and only had a CCTV image of her walking near Clapham Common. By Tuesday 9th they arrested a man for kidnap and the next day discovered human remains. The following day they upgraded the kidnap charge to murder. The suspect was brought before magistrates within two days ie today. He is going to Crown Court - the Old Bailey - next Tuesday, 16th March. So, 13 days between Sarah's disappearance and a Crown Court trial for the accused. Clearly the authorities want swift justice, to reassure the public, but my God that was awesome work by the police. Many women have gone missing over the years and their bodies never found. Sometimes, remains are found years later, by a dog walker or a jogger. Not this time. The whole case has been solved within a fortnight. The cops deserve a pat on the back for this one.
