Sometimes, when I take pictures of lesser important subjects or clear text, I don't need a high resolution.

Sometimes, even 640×480 is enough, such as low-light photography where higher resolutions almost just mean more detailed noise.

The lower resolution options are also suitable for photo junkies.

Honestly manufacturer specs mean dick. I have a 12 mp camera that looks worse than nearly decade + old 8 mp smart phones. They just make this shit up for the most part. There are no checks and balances. This is how they keep you reliant on brands. Most apple users have no idea they're buying 4+ yr old hardware w/ slightly better supported coding temporarily. Just let your iPhone go "outta date", and shit will be slower than a decade old android in the 3rd year you own it. I have no idea what I'm saying and will not correct previous text b/c fuck you
