A nuclear battery woudl be better, and last for centuries. Even if totally safe in design, it would never be allowed since it would do to power companies what cell phones have done to land line phone companies.

Nuclear batteries are good for long term, low power uses. They rely on either photovoltaic or thermal energy generation and therefore have a low power density. High power devices would not be able to utilize such batteries as they cannot keep up with the power demand. Even RTGs (radio-thermal generators) powered by PU-238 are impractical as high power delivery systems, ignoring of course the massive danger potential they have. Also, consumers can't be trusted with radioactive materials as casual commodity items. Atomic batteries would become a huge problem in landfills and the environment if lazy consumers don't send the batteries back for decommissioning or recycling. Those recycling companies could also cause problems by simply shipping them off to so third world country as e-waste instead of radioactive materials. There's just too many issues with atomic batteries and hardly any benefits at this time.
