I tried to post my chat username for matrix.org with matrix.to and the urls gets broken due to the automatic replacement of the username with

e.g. https://matrix.to/#/@asdf_1111:chat.poal.co

it looks like the username is changed to markdown and that alters the url

That’s normal. @ is for mentions.

yes, but if it is a url, it should take preference to the mention logic

You might want to use the hyperlink markdown for URLs that contain @
