Can there be a choice in settings for drop down for subs that are subscribed only? That would make the list shorter to the ones preferred to be used by the account.

It's not a list per se. You have to start typing a sub name and only then you'll get a suggestion.
The search list will only show subs you are not banned from as well as non-disabled subs.
Also, if you are creating a poll, only the subs that have polls enabled will show in the search list.
