My sadness overrules me.
The sorrows of the mind
And I find with age the fading memories
all the quickness of our time
pasts like flowing rivers,
bitter and the sweet
till no more the sun shines upon my door
all I was, all I knew, all who I adored
pass swiftly as we part, as we meet
like strangers in the street
past too and are no more.
Those who are, those who were, those who will be
those who come after, and before.
Even kings and emperors before the tyranny of death and ages
stand paupers arm in arm with the poor.
Till oblivion or old age, that deathless sleep
from what dreams we may arise again, unbeckoned
out of the great wheel of stars and turning ages
And meet again, warm familiar faces,
from long ago, as if from heaven,
all the actors upon their stages
in nature's greatest show.
Farewell! for now, to find you next
At the curtains rising.
Old friends, and family, patrons of my common kind.
Kith and kin and countrymen, to find you all, again.
In the empire of the soul, and the kingdoms of the mind.
My sadness overrules me.
The sorrows of the mind
And I find with age the fading memories
all the quickness of our time
pasts like flowing rivers,
bitter and the sweet
till no more the sun shines upon my door
all I was, all I knew, all who I adored
pass swiftly as we part, as we meet

past too and are no more.
