Having a somewhat older perspective, I can understand the thinking of "never give up or in" in this. There is another view though. Having lived a long and productive life, including the raising of children, it is also a time to sit back, enjoy, and watch with pleasure the roads that have been traveled and the strength with which they persevere. Knowing when to hand the reins over and be part of their pleasures and pains, and how they handle them, is satisfying.
