It actually wasn't that long ago you could do that, wages were decent and prices were reasonable. 1994ish or so.
As I was leaving college, tuition at the school I was attending went up ~17% per credit hour. It's now looking $200/ch in the eye. For perspective, it was about 2.7x my hourly wage in 1994, now it's closer to 6.7x.
