This is why civilians shouldn't step in the way of their political class getting toppled. When you do that not only do you make the mistake of sacrificing your life for them, but you also endanger the entire civilian population when it becomes hard to distinguish yourself from the entire rest of the population. If you want to punish an invader because you don't like their regime either, form an insurgency after the conflict between state actors is settled. Occupying a country with an insurgency can cost trillions.
