The first moonwalk type step was done back in like the 1940's and can be found online.

Michael Jackson was a great dancer, but a lot of his moves were borrowed from Bob Fosse. Also, Jeffrey Daniel from Shalamar did the moonwalk (I believe he called it The Glide) on Top of the Pops like a yer before MJ. This is a really good clip of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qokA5khruY

Shalamar was good group, too. They weren't really a good fit, but they still made it work until Howard Hewitt's head got really big.

My theory is that decades of popping their knees and ankles like that leads to fucked up hips that get these stars addicted to pain medications in their mid-lives.

Dick van Dyke did the first moonwalk about 30 years earlier.
