The first moonwalk type step was done back in like the 1940's and can be found online.

Michael Jackson was a great dancer, but a lot of his moves were borrowed from Bob Fosse. Also, Jeffrey Daniel from Shalamar did the moonwalk (I believe he called it The Glide) on Top of the Pops like a yer before MJ. This is a really good clip of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qokA5khruY

Shalamar was good group, too. They weren't really a good fit, but they still made it work until Howard Hewitt's head got really big.
