You and I are, quite simply, outnumbered by stupid sheep who have no vested interest in making hard decisions to ensure their long-term survival. Instead, they prefer to dopamine rush entertain themselves. The Internet used to be for technical, academic, or philosophical free-thinkers. Now, it's primarily developed to entertain the proletariat masses. It's the circus in bread and circuses. It's the reason Rome is burning so slowly this time around.
