I live with my friend who'se a financial advisor. Overall he's a great guy, really good at his job. But like ... this guy has a phobia of doing any housework or DIY stuff, its scary. He was showing me around, and he wanted to get a GC to fix some shit in his house, but it was dumb crap like replacing a breaker in the breaker panel, or putting a screen on a window, or buying a valve key for the fireplace (those square looking ones). I was thinking, you don't need a GC for half this crap, like it can be done by yourself pretty easily.

And then there's the stark difference in the way we think, I'm a very minimal, like to get dirty kind of guy. He's very much more of the glamorous, likes to show off mindset. The thing is, I don't mind it, especially if he's gifting me this stuff, but its clear that his lifestyle and mine clearly do not match, at all. He likes to drive expensive cars, I still drive my beat up truck. And sure, some could say my truck is on the older, run down side, and it doesn't look like a Porsche or a Mercedes, but it doesn't need to. It has a functional purpose, of which it does it really well, its paid off since I paid it in cash, has no severe mechanical damage of any kind.

Is it possible that you're mistaking his lack of desire to do the things with a fear of attempting them?

Your mindset is to save money by spending time doing the thing. His mind set is to save time by spending money to get the thing done.

Yes you gain a sense of accomplishment/pride by doing it yourself. To each their own and all that.

But yeah you aren't displaying an instance of learned helplessness here.
