California passed a law in 2018 that required websites to inform you that they're spying on you and request permission to do so. Websites before were obviously still spying on you, they just didn't have to tell you.

It's like all those prop 65 notices you see everywhere. Information saturation makes the warnings completely useless.

I'm wichu, if a site axs for cookies I leave. Especially when using tor.

The notification came with GDPR legislation in Europe. Lots of American sites also want Euro traffic and/or business, so that’s why.
