As someone who has been running a contractor business, albeit a small one, for years, find someone else. It’s not even just about tools going missing, it’s that they’ll always have to go to a “doctors appointment“ or “pick up their son“ and leave you hanging at the times when it’s most important. Dealt with this with about five different people. They work really hard for maybe two days, then all of a sudden they need to start leaving halfway through the day and only giving me 20 minutes notice before they go, or they take two hour lunches and make up some excuse about having to unlock the apartment door for their girlfriend. It’s nothing but excuses. And what you describe sounds exactly the kind of people I’ve been dealing with. Now I will say that if you only need them for a couple days, use them and pay them and it’ll work out fine. But if you need them for anything longer than that it will devolve into a whirlwind of excuses very very quickly. Trust me.
This is especially the case if you are a nice guy and are willing to do things like give them a few extra bucks for gas, or are sympathetic to things going on in their life so you give them a lot of leeway with the times they show up and leave. These people, whether they do it intentionally or not, are “users” in every sense of the word
Today is a good example, he promised he would call me tomorrow so we could start working on stuff around the place im selling. The guy didn't call yesterday, and i called him THREE times this morning and no answer. He finally called a few minutes ago, but now i have actual stuff to do, so he missed his window to help. This happens constantly, and it is very aggravating because it delays all my plans and causes a huge amount of timing problems. A 1 day fix ends up taking weeks because it's left incomplete, pieces are everywhere, and my entire place now looks like a warzone
I fee your pain man, I deal w this constantly. If you were in the DMV area I’d help you out
