What a goddamned scam. The government does nothing to deserve all of this productivity along the chain!

(no, I didn't "just" figure this out, but wanted to hear Poal's thoughts)

It doesn't work like that... Sales tax and "use tax" are only charged for completed products. Companies that manufacture things give their tax ID to the places they make purchases and don't pay the tax.

This even goes for building construction. A contractor won't pay sales tax for construction materials, but they do collect tax from the person who ordered the contstruction.

Depends on the state especially on construction

Pretty sure if the contractor is required to charge sales tax on the full job then he doesn't also pay it on the materials.

Materials Incorporated into Real Estate. Sales of tangible personal property are taxable. For example, if a contractor purchases roofing material in Texas for a Texas project, the purchase is subject to the Texas sales tax.
