Regex is not greedy, it's charitable, if anything. A rule doesn't greedily take characters and throw them out, or whatever these niggers meant. The rule charitably creates a new subset of the parent string and says "hey other rules, here's much less to work on, go at it faggots!" #**[^ :]** is not greedy.
