Having worked at a numerous retail, including a gas station: the only place where the over all competentcy and giveafuck of the staff was lower was the Jack In The Box I did 2 weeks at before I quit. Gas station workers are literally aren't good enough to hack regular retail. They're a warm body to man a cash register and occasionally make coffee. In fact, in other stations I've applied to and talked to over the years, most of the stocking is either done by the vendors or the managers directly. The actual thought requirements for most gas station jockies hovers around nigger level. Hence: stop setting your bar so high when work requirements are literally below sea.level.
...when work requirements are literally below sea.level.
I agree partly. But how difficult would it be to make and post a list of job duties, and explain that said list needs to be checked off or completed at a set interval? Service station jobs I had as a teenager did this. And I was doing oil changes tire work at the same time.
Expectations and performance are both much lower today, and it is disappointing to bear witness to it.
I think you misunderstand. They DO have those check lists. Fuck, my job now has that. The issue is that it literally costs more to fire them and rehire someone than to just let them soak a paycheck and push buttons on a register.
Just as an example, and this is just one. The store I was at during covid spent approximately 1k on each new hire. For time spent training, for behind the scenes paperwork, to set them up for state SSI, etc. etc. to fire someone cost another 250 to 500 depending on role and circumstances.
A warm body who shows up is better than trying to find someone with the giveafuck in an ocean of people who sure as fuck ain't doing that for minimum wage.
Thus why I'll buy my own equipment and supplies for the road now.
