I don't know if there's a connection but dry Arab states are like the US during prohibition. "Alcohol" is available but it's all bathtub quality and kills many people. The locals mostly have no interest for it and it's risks but the flood of tourists must be driving enough demand for alcohol that it wouldn't surprise me if people were getting poisoned and dying.
Especially if they're already compromised.
