This fellow breaks down what would be needed for an effective orbital DEW as well as the challenges that would need to be overcome.

Personally, I'm not sure DEW was used in Hawaii but, I do know that the government is hiding something and likely have weapons tech beyond the parameters discussed here. The limitations however are due to the nature of the universe so even if the gov has better this video should still apply. The question becomes how did they overcome the limitations and to what degree.

I appreciate that he is sharing his knowledgeable take on the potential for satelite lasers, but personally I think there is far more potential for a ground based energy weapon that is reflected off of one or multiple satelites, or even off of the ionosphere.

It's more likely to be a laser on a medium to large airplane.

C130 looking planes were spotted flying around maui during the fires. Not noted by any planefags, so idk if they were transponding or not

Lasers dont bounce off the ionosphere. Some frequencies of radio waves do but thats not the discussion here
