Old news (May), but pretty cool. Potential uses include ion exchange media, filtering and ??? They don't mention the form being analogous to anything found in nature though, so that's kind of exciting/frightening.

Somewhere I read about a treatment to filter your blood clean with some kind of japanese sea coral sponge or so. This stuff here might be an adequate substitute.
