Now if you fail chance are you die so.. If you just can get away with it by giving away your wallet it might be the better the option

To add onto the fake wallet bit. Load it with a couple bills and fake credit cards so that the thief thinks it is your actual wallet. Using a bit of actual cash in it can be helpful. Better to lose 20 bucks or so then your real wallet be in jeopardy.
Particularly useful to do on a international vacation. Also a good idea to keep it less secure so pickpockets take that one.

Pickpocket will sometimes use someone who seems to be a good samaritan to make you pat yourself down so they know where to target. Done sometime by the people via asking if you dropped your wallet/phone.
