I think it was in the context of them fleeing the Russian advance in east Germany and being transported to camps further west. Nobody wanted to fall under the Soviets. There were even places where Russian jews were by agreement to be shipped to Russia, even if they never lived there. They refused to leave the barracks and many chose to hang themselves instead.
