I mean that's effectively what hybrids with an electric only switch on mode are. I know poal doesn't like EVs but they're not all terrible. Honda makes a decent hybrid line that you can plug in with no special equipment and get like 35-50 miles (model depending) without burning gas.
For people who mostly drive around town but want the gas option for longer trips they're not a bad deal.
EVs being great for the environment might be a scam but for personal convenience not all bad.
