When I was a kid, my mother used to take me and my 2 brothers and baby sister on the subway from Brooklyn to the city to see the Christmas display in Macy's department store at night (5pm) while snow was falling and everybody was a helpful, smiling White person.
I assumed, at that early age, that that was normal.
