It's the most dangerous shipping lane in the entire world for a long explanation reason. As long as ships have been traveling to the west coasts of the Americas, they have been sinking there. So you name it, you'll probably find it down there.

As a side note you probably don't care too much about: the same reason that Cape Horn is so dangerous is the reason that it's so difficult or impossible to get to and from Antarctica without going during a safe transfer window.
