In suburban America a grocery store and supermarket are the same thing. No one distinguishes, and most people don't even use the word supermarket at all. Most of America would never use the word bodega at all either and if encountered one would call it a convenience store. If you took any American not from NYC to a bodega and told them that's a grocery store they'd laugh at you and tell you they're not doing their grocery shopping at an unbranded 7-11.
