It pushes the shuttle up and out of most of the atmosphere before achieving those speeds. A plane needs to coast upwards with wind under the wings. The shuttles wings do next to nothing in getting it up. For fucks sake, it's upside down during the part of the burn that brings it up to speed.
Its not very aerodynamic, it was nicknamed the flying brick by the pilots who flew it. Without the onboard computer it would be unflyable.
