Electro magnetic fields deflect solar "winds" (radiation bursts/mass ejections) which would blow our atmosphere away gravity keeps the gasses here, it's why air has different pressures based on altitude just like water has different pressures based on depth; without gravity and electromagnetic fields solar winds would strip the oceans away too.
