I don't buy it. I'd need to see proof.

This is intended to look stupid. My guess - war games in a red vs. blue scenario where the 'red' team are the 'bad guys' and are wanting to look a bit goofy. (Hence also the bright red combat helmet, which is equally silly.)

those are covid era photos. You wouldn't put facepaint on underneath a mask.
