If your father was in a nursing home he would have been dead by now. They put everyone on anti-depressants and sedatives even if they aren't needed, and the average lifespan of someone put into a nursing home is about 3 months from the time they enter the place. I wouldn't put any of my relatives or people I care about into such a place under any circumstances. I've got a family friend who is 96 who looks like she's in her 60s. When she said she was born in 1925 I had to ask her again to make sure, because I was in disbelief. Sharp as a tack, too. Her daughter also inherited the same genes, she's is in her early 70s but looks like she's in her 40s.
Yeah I feel the same way about the nursing homes. I have had doctors recommend that Dad should go to a "care facility" for "rehab" several times, and I say "no way." So far I have been able to take care of him here and he is pretty happy.
Yes, those people exist, they don't all get dementia from their 60th.
