Black has always been a symbol of evil and ignorance throughout human history, in all lands. It is the color of shadow, of darkness, of night, of what is hidden. The association of black with evil is universal.

The "Black Man" of the European witch cult wasn't a Negro, he was a white man who led the witch sabbat. Men were nicknamed "black" in Europe if they had black hair and dark eyes. For example, Black Bart.

What Americans today don't realize is that until very recently, seeing a Negro in Europe was a rare event. They never appeared in polite society. They never held a government position. They were looked upon as incompetent and degenerate. The idea of a white woman marrying a Negro would not have even occurred to most white people. It was too disgusting to imagine ever happening.
