I don't obey speed limits. Everything else though.
Going through a red light when nobody is around or turning left on red when nobody is around or any number of other things wouldn't need to be illegal if competent people were driving.
When you think nobody is around, then you ignore the red and hit someone. Often it's better to take side streets to avoid traffic lights, where you just have a stop sign rather than a red light.
If you look both ways, and there are no cars coming, red lights are pointless. The real purpose of the light is to direct right of way for busy intersections. Not to make someone wait 2 minutes at 2am when there are no other cars on the road.
To lolocus's point, if only sensible people existed it wouldn't need to be illegal to follow the purpose of a traffic sign, but also ignore it when safe to do so.
