Wholely voluntary Communism is ethical. If you think about it, a nuclear family is Communistic. Its members contribute to their ability and consume resources according to their need. You dont tell your infant "If you dont work, you dont eat".
That being said, a nuclear family is voluntary. A husband and wife chose each other, and they chose to accept the responsibility of supporting their children until they reach adulthood. Once they reach adulthood, the children can leave. Even earlier if they seek emancipation.
Furthermore, voluntarily joining a hippy dippy commune is ethical. It's economically inefficient, but if membership is voluntary...you do you boo.
The problem with Communism is when it's involuntary. State Communism is always involuntary and thus evil, for much the same reason that voluntary sex is an act of love for your spouse and involuntary sex is abhorrent rape.
Also it's among your own people. Genetically you are somewhat all one. Totally fails when it's a foreign race with foreign values and goals.
