All the way back to the 1860's when many soldiers were drafted and were not yet citizens. Today draftees and volunteers have a fast-track to US Citizenship by honorably serving for 5 years. This includes their spouses and natural-born children if not already citizens. I knew several guys in the Crotch (USMC) who were non-citizens, mostly from Mexico but one guy from the Soviet Union. This was back in 1965-68 time. The ones who survived got their citizenship. I think that the Russian guy went for 20+ years and retired as a Master Gunnery Sergeant with some SIGINT detachment.
Thanks for this background. Much appreciated.
