They way overuse the diagnosis so they can just throw drugs at people.
Story time. Years ago I ended up in a looney bin. In my very first meeting with the shrink there she said that according to my records she concluded I was bipolar and recommended some drugs. I'd been there two days and all I'd done is chain smoke and talk to the other loonies, not a word said in any group, so I don't know how she came up with her "diagnosis". I read the paperwork she gave me explaining it and I said no, and that I'd never been "manic" my entire life. Meeting ended and the next morning I'm given the drugs she talked about.
Was there a week and never talked to another shrink. On discharge i was told that my insurance wasn't covering the whole stay like they said on admit and I owed them $2000. I ask why they didn't tell me this and they said they didn't want to "disturb my treatment". Told them to get fucked and never paid a fucking cent and it's off my credit report now.
It's all a fucking scam.
Edit: They referred me to a shrink on dicharge, went to my first appointment and they asked how long I'd been HIV positive, told them I wasn't. The loonie bin, which is somehow well regarded in my town, sent me to a shrink specifically for HIV positive people. Called and tried to get a new referral and was told I'm on my own.
Used to work in mental "health". Also became disabled in 05 due to lifelong history of depression. They don't know what the hell is going on. Bipolar is the chic diagnosis the last 20 years or so. I was with a dr. who within 5 minutes declared me bipolar. I've had many hospital stays... if you aren't crazy when you go in you will be when you come out! Thank God for dogs and gardens to keep me on an even keel... don't depend on psychiatry to do it! When I worked in the field the doctors were crazier than the patients. Stay far away from the system if you can!
