Bomb sniffing dogs should work too. The majority of military high explosives are nitrated fuels so they are smelly.

Smelly enough for humans to detect or is that beyond our capabilities?

I'm not sure. I have no hands on experience with this stuff but it would be interesting to have some samples of MDX and TNT and others, and have them at different ages and see what their smell is.

But dogs are also a lot better at making sense of smells and pick up on specific smells in spite of others. Our brains seem to be only able to say eww, that smells kind of funky, or I like that smell. We also seem to be able to distinguish between a sweet smell and a acred smell. But that's not much. If the issue is nitrate smell I don't think we would be able to tell apart MDX and fertilizer.

Also just my opinion but I don't think those land mines are majorly TNT. We've been using MDX since WWII, it's easier to make, is stronger, and is stable enough for that application. Often TNT is mixed into MDX to increase it's stability (to make C4 and other titles depending on their ratio and plasticizer). But there would be a low TNT requirement there so there likely is some just because it's standard practice to mix the two and that's what militarizes usually have on hand but just so you know there is probably MDX in there too.
