In his time this was good advice. Sadly the media landscape has changed since then. Just look at those god awful Kardashians for instance. They have no work to generate publicity for all they promote is themselves because that's all they have to sell. None of their fans seem to mind that they don't actually do anything or have any talent, they're on TV after all.
