When presented with the truth at the end, the boy didn’t want to be a girl. But all pressured him to become a girl at the end and was successfully groomed (to become her “rightful gender”).
And a main character, as you knew of a young boy, was now “a beautiful girl”. And not only that, but transformed into the beautiful princess of Oz! The main character to essentially be in all the remaining fourteen books and foundation of Oz going out, Ozma.
