use the farmers market not only to buy, but as source of information and connections so you can buy directly on the farm, is what i would suggest... "farmers markets" are most of the time merchants, not the farmers themselves... if you find one farmer who sells his own produce he maybe can point you to others who do the same. on my commute to work, i drive by several farmers, one sells potatoes, the other sells pork, one has beef, and another guy has a shared space where several farmers put together and sell veggies and milk and cheese and even homemade pasta and eggs and yoghurt. Some stuff i need to be at certain times, because the shop is only rarely open, yet other farmers have vending machines for their produce.
keep looking, and if you cant find anything, do something about it! be your own merchant maybe?
I didn't know about the merchant aspect of the farmer's market.
I found a co-op to buy bulk food but most of their dry bulk food comes from outside of the USA.
Gotta keep digging.
