Yes, the future (and past? in this case) is dumb. Since this is a part of the built in SOS/Starlink system I bet it will even disable your ECU if you tamper with it or remove it. I remember reading something like that before.

From the post: "Subaru partnered with a service called STARLINK which shares your location in the event of collisions, among other things. STARLINK intermittently tries to phone home by hitting 3G towers.

Now that 3G is shutting down, the digital communications module (DCM) gets stuck in an infinite loop"

In the USA, all 3G has been offline since 2022. The last 2G services go dark in 2024.

Veringular was the last 3G carrier here, it went dead Dec 31 2022.

Yeah, they wanted to kill it off long before then and some did actually stick around into early 2023 to let companies upgrade/replace "critical" infrastructure but that was fairly spot-by-spot. It was "officially" offline but not actually offline in some places.

If you design a project with a cell modem in it.. You should probably make it modular so you can replace it with a newer piece of kit if you expect your hardware to be in use for a very long period of time.

I still have a few 2G devices here, looking for replacements on those. I was using some Zoom 4G modems, but those lasted about a year before getting unreliable.
