It is exceedingly easy to determine what drugs, remedies and non pharmaceutical interventions were effective. Anything that the "authorities" tried to suppress or even ban is likely highly effective in proportion to their enthusiasm for suppressing it. The obverse is also true in that the treatments they push the hardest are likely to be the most harmful.
