Not only does it become useless as soon as strains with mutated spike proteins show up, the antibodies you developed for the spike protein take over your immune response and do not allow you to develop proper immunity to those new strains.
People who did not get vaccinated, or were exposed to the real virus before vaccination, have a broader immunity that targets multiple parts of the virus and can adapt to new strains.
