It is a powerful pull to think things will be OK because key individuals are fighting surreptitiously for you. Hope springs eternal to our demise.
Yes it is, but it doesn't make void the possibility of "key individuals fighting for you." The book of Judges in the OT is all about leaders saving the people after they "forsook the God of their fathers."
The exploits of six of these—Othniel, Ehud, Deborah, Gideon, Jephthah, and Samson—are related at length, and all are shown to have delivered Israel from oppression or danger.
Just adding a counterbalance to your statement.
And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
33 Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions.
34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
Leaders being used is actually the norm, not the exception. What happens with the theory of Q and Trump and 'whitehats' remains to be seen, but it is possible.
