What was a US Navy 'spy ship' doing there without an escort in the first place ?....
There was a carrier that could have scrambled fighters and had them on scene in minutes.
Any reason why they didn't ?/. I'm not at all familiar with the specifics but presumably wouldn't the Uss liberty have put out an immediate sos/ under attack to the carrier group ?
Depends on what their orders are/were. When I was deployed in 2001-2002, we had 4 or 5 different subs in our group. They just came and went. We never knew which was with us, but we knew when there was one with us.
The video that I saw informed me that the officer in charge, I believe it was an admiral, decided that sending fighters might cause an international incident. He wanted confirmation from the White House.
