I'd love to blame the tiny hats for this, but Mozart and Beethoven still don't sell, and it's FREE! Unfortunately, most people left to their own will choose instantly gratifying, mass produced shit ... for music, food, literature, basically everything.
The truth of it is, without the benefit of a few, wealthy patrons willing to self-fund the most beautiful music in the history of the world, we would never have heard of Mozart and Beethoven either. The masses then and now seek out and consume slop in all things. The few of us who know better bear the burden of civilization. I suspect this has and will always be our burden.
As a side note, if you aren't a patron of your local symphony or opera house, now is a good time to start. If not preserved even the old things will disappear eventually.
