The difference here though is to make it so that the men were specifically rejected by the women as mates by the women who had options at the time. The real experiment isn't about survival, as we all know the women will do very poorly in that aspect, but to instead determine how long it takes for the women to decide partnering with the rejected men to gain food, resources, safety and labor in exchange for not "settling". Essentially, how long will it take for the women to realize their bodies are their only currency in the world of hard times. That is a bigger thing than what we saw on that show before.
