This happens in Minnesota too. Supposedly anonymized (sp?) and sent to the University of Minnesota for "research". Parents can opt out, IF they know about it. Nurses are told to keep it secret unless parents ask.

Friend of mine is having a child born soon. I told him to explicitly state that everything the hospital does to the baby must be explained and consented to. They may still pull a fast one, but hopefully then he'll have legal grounds to sue if something goes wrong.

You have to read every line of the paperwork. Don't expect them to be honest when they give a quick rundown. The employee's explanation isn't worth anything.
