I mean, to be fair, it doesn't sound like he killed his girlfriend. You do 3 AM raids to catch people off guard. It also turns out that people caught off guard might react by trying to defend themselves. Depending on the order of events, it also might be difficult to hear the police announce themselves if you're either still asleep, or still recovering from a flashbang.

The man was also convicted of other charges, so he's hardly off the hook. Saying he murdered his girlfriend because the police shot her is over reaching on their side by far.

In almost every state, participating in an illegal activity that results in death makes you responsible for the death. Even getaway drivers get charged with murder if the guys who went into the jewelry store killed someone.

Dude was a drug dealer and fired on police. I don’t care if he heard them announce or not (though I don’t believe at all that he didn’t), he either thought it was the police or he thought he was getting robbed for the drugs in his house.

Well they got him on the easier charge. It's good enough. No sense in wasting endless resources to try and achieve an exceptionally high bar. It's more efficient this way.
