Why is the Secret Service protecting a criminal and a traitor? I'm pretty sure that if I had a house in Malibu, the Secret Service wouldn't be protecting me.

Why was a tall fence built around his fathers property? Is it to 'protect' him from outsiders, or to stop him running away?

If powerful people thought he was going to turn state's evidence, they'd remove him. It's basically protective custody.
